About Visible Ink
Visible Ink
is a friendly and informal writers’ group based in Edinburgh. We’ve been running for over 15 years and welcome all writers, whether you’re just starting out or an old hand, whether you write for fun or for publication, whatever you write: fact or fiction, long or short, poetry or prose, song or drama.
Our members range from published authors to first-time writers, and from students to pensioners. We're friendly and constructive, and happy to hear new writing from anyone who chooses to share it.
A typical evening at
Visible Ink
will see members bringing in pieces they're working on to read aloud, and to receive constructive feedback from the rest of the group. We're equally happy to hear pieces in very early stages of construction as well as finished work. There's no pressure to share your work if you don't want to, nor will you be pressured to give feedback to other readers if you don't feel comfortable doing so.
There's all sorts of styles and genres at
Visible Ink
. Recent sessions have included Science Fiction, abstract poetry, journalism, polical comedy, theatrical play scripts, ghost stories, romance, historical fiction and urban fantasy, as well as many others.

Jacobite Fire by David Moore
In 1712, Thomas Bowes, soldier and spy, returns to England from the continental wars to find a country in conflict. His family estates, usurped by fanatical Jacobites to fund rebellion, are in ruin. Meanwhile, Thomas Savery, inventor of a steam pumping engine, is at odds with his investors. With the fate of his engine uncertain, Savery sends his step-daughter, Annabella, on a dangerous mission to discover the intentions of his competitors and enemies.
The arrogant and cruel Viscount Mountclare upsets the plans of both Bowes and Savery as he seeks to further his own ends – to place the Pretender, James Stuart on the throne.
How do the fates of Bowes and Savery come together? Can Bowes regain his property? Will Savery’s engine succeed? Or will Mountclare destroy them both?
